6 Yoga Poses to Soften the Heart and Shoulders

These are the shapes I return to when my chest feels tight and my heart needs space to breathe again…

Whenever life starts to feel heavy - when I’ve been holding too much or giving too much - I find myself craving softness, especially in my heart and shoulders, where I carry so much tension.

These five yoga poses have become my go-to shapes for release and nourishment. They’re not fancy or strenuous. But they’re deeply healing when I meet them with breath and intention.

1. Supported Fish Pose (Matsyasana Variation)

I love placing a bolster or folded blanket under my upper back and resting in stillness. This gentle heart-opener feels like a quiet invitation to trust, receive, and open without force. I usually stay here for 3–5 minutes, breathing into my chest.

2. Thread the Needle

This twist-like shoulder release gets into the upper back and between the shoulder blades. It’s invaluable when I’ve been hunched over or feeling emotionally closed off. I let my head rest completely and use my breath to soften where I’m holding.

3. Puppy Pose (Uttana Shishosana)

A beautiful blend of heart opening and surrender. I often practice this pose with a folded blanket under my chest for support. It feels like bowing my heart toward the Earth - both humbling and freeing.

4. Eagle Arms (Garudasana Arms)

This one helps unravel the tight spaces across my upper back and shoulders. I like to pair it with breathwork: inhale to lift the elbows slightly, exhale to round forward and soften into the stretch.

5. Reclined Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana)

This pose is pure rest. I often place one hand on my belly and one on my heart as I lie back with support under my spine. It feels like holding myself. Like saying, It’s okay to be soft right now.

6. Bound Revolve Chair Pose

A strong, twisting shape that opens the shoulder and wrings out tension. I enter slowly, binding one arm under my thigh and the other behind my back. It helps me find space in tight places–especially when I meet it with breath, not force.

A Final Note:

If your chest feels heavy, or if your shoulders are tight from holding too much, these shapes are here for you. They are not here to fix anything but to create space - space to feel, soften, and let your heart breathe again.

You don’t need to be flexible or experienced. Just willing to meet yourself with kindness.
