Exploring self-love as the foundation of every pose, and every pause…
Self-love isn’t just a feeling; it’s a practice. It’s the quiet attention we give ourselves on the mat, the patience we extend to our bodies, and the compassion we cultivate when life feels heavy. Every pose, every pause, every breath is an opportunity to honor the person we are right now. The person who is fully imperfect and wonderfully whole.
Yoga invites us to step into this awareness. When we slow down and listen, we notice where we carry tension, where we withhold kindness, and where we can choose gentleness instead. Self-love becomes tangible in these moments. It’s the softening of the shoulders, the release of a held breath, the gentle reassurance that you are enough.
It reminds me of what we explored in The Yoga of Belonging, where presence and connection are central. On the mat, belonging starts with ourselves. We create a space where we are welcome, seen, and cared for, even when the world outside feels distant or judgmental.
This awareness naturally spills off the mat. Self-love shapes how we move through our days, how we set boundaries, and how we respond to ourselves and others. It’s in small gestures: taking a moment to breathe before replying to a message, resting when the body asks for it, or offering ourselves encouragement instead of criticism.
Loving the person on and off the mat is about continuity. Moreover, carrying the lessons of mindfulness, compassion, and patience beyond the yoga practice. Every pause, every intentional breath, and every act of care is a reminder that love begins with the one person who is always with you: yourself.
