The Sacred Flow: Exploring Sun Salutations I & II

Surya Namaskar is a moving prayer. Learn the rhythm, meaning, and daily magic of this sacred sequence...

Some mornings, you wake up and feel the world's heaviness before your feet even touch the ground. On others, you rise with an energy that begs to be honored. In either case, a timeless, sacred sequence in yoga meets you exactly where you are - and lifts you toward where you want to be.

It’s called Sun Salutation, or in Sanskrit, Surya Namaskar. It's a moving meditation, a dance with your breath, and a powerful way to greet the day with intention, strength, and grace.

What Are Sun Salutations?

Sun Salutations are a series of linked yoga poses performed in a flowing sequence. Traditionally practiced at sunrise to honor the sun’s life-giving energy, they are designed to awaken the body, focus the mind, and warm the soul.

Each movement is paired with a breath - inhale to rise, exhale to fold - creating a grounding and uplifting rhythm.

There are several versions, but the two most commonly practiced are:

Sun Salutation A (Surya Namaskar A)

A simpler, foundational sequence that includes:

  1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
  2. Upward Salute (Urdhva Hastasana)
  3. Forward Fold (Uttanasana)
  4. Half Lift (Ardha Uttanasana)
  5. Plank to Chaturanga Dandasana (Low Push-Up)
  6. Upward-Facing Dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana)
  7. Downward-Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
  8. Return to Standing via Forward Fold

Its purpose is to build heat, strengthen the core, lengthen the spine, and synchronize movement with breath. It’s often used as a warm-up or a stand-alone meditation in motion.

Sun Salutation B (Surya Namaskar B)

A more dynamic variation that includes additional postures:

  • Chair Pose (Utkatasana)
  • Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I) on both sides - Along with all the postures from Sun Salutation A.

Its purpose adds intensity and power. It challenges balance, opens the hips, and encourages focus. Great for building stamina and inner fire.

Why Practice Sun Salutations Daily?

The real magic of Sun Salutations lies in repetition and rhythm. Like brushing your teeth or sipping your morning tea, they become a ritual - a sacred container for clarity, movement, and renewal.

Benefits include:

  • Gently wakes up and warms the entire body
  • Connects breath and movement, bringing mental calm
  • Improves flexibility, posture, and circulation
  • Offers a full-body stretch and strengthening in just 10 minutes
  • Cultivates mindfulness and presence before your day begins

Let It Be Sacred, Not Perfect

You don’t need to “master” the poses. You don’t need to be flexible or even wide awake. All you need is a few square feet of space and a willingness to move with your breath. Your Sun Salutation might be slow and steady today, fiery and fast tomorrow. Let it evolve. Let it meet you where you are.
